I Can Connect

The Principle of Oneness as laid out in the Spirit Whisperer book is one that is important to me and the students in our schools. The following activity helps students get a tactile feeling and visual view of the connectedness that exists within all of us and brings the Principle of Oneness to life in a dramatic and sometimes unexpected way.

I begin this activity by stating, "We are all individuals in this classroom, unique and diverse in special ways. While it is important to acknowledge and honor our diversity, it is equally important to celebrate the commonalties we share as students and as human beings."

I then go to the front of the room and share one thing about myself. It could be, "I like snow in winter," or "I tend to get nervous when I take tests." Any student that can relate to my comment stands and says, "I can connect with that." That student then comes to the front of the room and links elbows with me or with the person that began the activity. It then becomes their turn to make a statement about themselves.

Students share things like, "I like to ride horses," "I like to sleep in on Saturdays," "Listening to music is what I do to relax," or "I have over 20 Beanie Babies at home." As each statement is offered, one students stands and says, "I can connect with that." They then join the growing circle, linking on at the elbow with the person who made the last statement.

Eventually, everyone is connected leaving one open spot left in the circle.

At this point, the last person to join the circle keeps making statements about themselves until the person who began the activity can say, "I can connect to that." Now the circle is complete.

I always end this activity with students or participants in training groups by stating, "May the circle remind us that we never have to stand alone, unless we choose to.
