Dinosaurs Outside

By Darren Mattock

I woke at 3 am this morning. Charlie near me in his bed. Sleep didn't come easily. I put my headphones on and chose an audio book to try to lure me back.

It was about 3:30 am when Charlie stirred and I heard him in tears through the spoken words of the voice in my private head space. I whipped the headphones off and commando rolled out and over to grab Cha, scooped him into bed with me and pulled him close.

Dear boy had a nightmare. He was shaken. "Turn on ALL the lights NOW, dadda!". Soft voices. Soothing touches. Reassuring words. "You're safe, bubba. Dadda's here."
I listened as Cha shared his dream with me. A dinosaur was outside our door. Boy escaped on his scooter. Only just.

I felt him come back into his body. A more gentle rhythm came back to his breath. He accepted only one light on (cracker smashed our lamp a few months back with an epic ninja move, so it was the softest ceiling light we have in our little studio).

Cha took about half an hour to find sleep again. In my arms, head on my chest, us breathing together.

I love these parenting moments. I love being there for him, with him. I'm always grateful for an opportunity to be. Even at 3:30 am in the morning when there are dinosaurs outside.
