Dressed for Success

By Mitch Anthony

I had just finished speaking to parents in a rural Minnesota town when I was approached by a man who obviously had something to say.

"Well, you sure made more sense than the last fella I heard speak!" he began.

"Why's that?" I asked.

"Like you, he was talking about children's self-esteem, but I'd like to know which college gave him that Ph.D. he's got. He told us that if a kid wants designer clothes a good parent should get them because the kid's self-esteem depends on it."

"Really?" I was surprised.

"Yep," he said. "I want you to know, I can't afford designer pants and shoes for my kids. But that don't mean they can't be proud of who they are. See, I'm a pig farmer, and I happen to know that pig crap looks the same on Kmart jeans as it does on Calvin Kleins. I'm not fooled one bit. I know it's not what I put on the outside of my kids that makes 'em feel good about who they are. It's what I put on the inside very single day."

In spite of his children's lack of designer clothing, they were, indeed, "dressed for success."
